VALUE OF OTTAWA

CHECK ON ECONOMIC

NATIONALISM.

MR MALCOLM MACDONALD’S

VIEW,

SUPPORT BY MR ENDEAN.

(United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received November 8, 8.5 a.m. MELBOURNE, Nov. 8.

Speaking yesterday at the' Empire Parliamentary Association conference, Mr Malcolm MacDonald said the Ottawa Agreements had provided a check on unhealthy economic nationalism, which was the root of the depression. It was part of the spirit of Ottawa to try io get the Empire out of her' difficulties, but not _ by plunging the rest of the world into still greater difficulties. The agreements made at Ottawa were attempting to carrv British countries particularly, and the world in general, safely through the economic blizzard. Representatives of Britain, South Africa, Canada, India and New Zealand are attending the conference. Mr W. P. Endean (New Zealand) declared his complete faith in the efficacy of Ottawa and advocated a system of economic Empire planning. It had been said it was uneconomic for New Zealand to produce steel, yet Britain was producing butter at 2sJ3d a pound against New Zealand’s 7d, showing that effective planning was essential.
