PETITION TO HOUSE.
ALLEGATIONS BY NATIVES
PROTESTS AGAINST PROCEDURE.
Per Press Association. WANGANUI, Nov. 8. The secretary of the Maniapoto Maori Council, Mr Wetini Hotu, has written to Rev. A. J. Seamer, superintendent of the Methodist Church Home Mission Department, protesting against the secrecy attaching to the withdrawal of the petition recently presented to Parliament allegedly on behalf of the Maori people of the King Country urging the licensing of hotels in that territory. He forwards a declaration signed and alleging that it is eight years since some of the Natives signed a petition, then believing it was in favour of prohibition, and the other names on the petition include a number who have been dead for several years. It is suggested that the petition was part of an old one got up eight years ago. The writer further alleges that promises were made that land would be bought 'for the benefit of the Natives if the licenses were granted. Another statement, signed by King Ivoroki Tawhiao and other chiefs of the King Country, confirms their strong opposition to licenses being issued.
