THE STOCK MARKETS.

JOHNSONVILLE SALE. A full yarding of cattle and an average entry of sheep came forward, at the Johnsonville sale held yesterday by Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd., and Abraham and Williams, Ltd. Cattle met with a fair demand a.t prices showing a decline on last week's rates. Bullocks were about 10s to 15s per head less, and heifers showed a drop of 10s per head. Sheep, generally, which were of good quality, met with a dull sale. Wethers declined Is, ewes 2s to 2s 6d, while lambs sold on a par with last week's rate.

WESTFIELD SALE. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Nov. 7. There was a much smaller yarding of cattle at the Westfield sale to-day, about 150 fewer being offered than a week ago. The quality was good, but there was a distinct shortage of extra heavy, prime steers, which met a steady demand throughout, with prices very firm on those of last week, while light cattle tended to be a shade firmer. Extra choice ox beef made 27s a 1001 b, and prime 24s to 265; secondary and plain, 19s to 235; prime young cow and heifer beef, 22s to 265; other cow beef, 14s to 21s. Extra heavy prime steers made £lO 12s to £ll 10s; heavy, £9 5s to £lO 10s; lighter, £7 10s to £9 2s 6d; light, £6 12s 6d to £7 7s 6d; small and unfinished, £5 to £6 10s; extra heavy prime young cows and heifers, £6 15s to £7 12s 6d; heavy, £5 5s to £6 12s 6d; lighter, £3 15s to £5 2s 6d ; other killable cows, £1 5s to £3 10s. Calves were also in reduced numbers, though the offering was still above the average. Very few runners were penned and heavy vealers were short. The sale was inclined to be erratic, though all classes sold readily at values on a par with those of a fortnight ago. Runners, 40s to 87s; vealers, 25s to 70s. Sheep of good quality were offered in average numbers, and sold under steady competition. The tone of the market tended to bo weaker, though price levels showed little change. Hoggets were in short supply, and sold under an active demand at improved rates. The smaller entry of spring lambs attracted buyers, particularly butchers, a

ready sale resulting. Wethers, prime, 22s to 28s; unfinished, 17s to 21s 9d; maiden ewes, 21s to 24s 6d; prime ewes, 14s to 20s 9d; unfinished, 10s to 13s 9d; hoggets, prime, 20s to 24s 6d; unfinished, 13s 6d to 19s 9d; spring lambs, 13s 6d to 24s 6d. Pigs were in ..good supply, with a fair offering of medium prime sorts. There was an easier tendency at the beginning of the sale for both porkers and baconers, with a marked improvement later, values being very firm at the end of the sale. Store pigs were again in very keen demand, with values remaining high. Baconers, 51s to 755; porkers, 32s to 50s; large stores, 32s to 38s. Prices per lb: Baconers, sid to sid; porkers, 6d to 6Jd.

STORTFORD LODGE VALUES. Per Press Association. HASTINGS, Nov. 7. A small entry of 133 fat cattle, with a considerable proportion of dairy-bred stock included, came forward for today’s sale at Stortford Lodge, and values in consequence showed a distinct rise on late rates, with the demand good and bidding keen. Dairy-bred lines sold well, and made very satisfactory prices. Bullocks, medium to prime, £7 18s 6d to £8 15s; others from £5 15s; cows, medium to prime, £5 6s to £6 15s; others from £3 2s; heifers, medium to prime, £5 12s 6d to £6 8s; others from £3 12s 6d. An entry of 680 store cattle of high quality met a firm market, and prices improved appreciably under good local and outside competition. Bullocks and steers made to £6 10s; heifers to £2 17s; cows to £3 6s. Fat sheep were in moderate supply, and values were on a par to easier according to quality, good sheep being unchanged. Ewes, medium to prime, shorn, 17s 2d to 18s 7d; woolly, to 20s 6d; wethers, shorn, to 21s 4d; ewes, others, from 13s 9d; hoggets, woolly, to 23s 6d; shorn, to 19s 6d; lambs, to 22s 3d. Store sheep made late values, with a good inquiry for ewes, Shorn four-tooths to 235; aged, to 10s 9d; ewes and lambs, all counted to 15s 6d; woolly ewe hoggets to 29s 2d; wether hoggets, to 21s Id ; wethers, shorn, to 20s; woolly, to 255. :

PRICES AT BURNSIDE

Per Press Association. DUNEDIN, Nov. 7. Smaller entries of beef and mutton were offered at to-day’s Burnside sale. Some extra heavy bullocks and cows were included in the yarding of 213 fat cattle, and these met a market better than last week by 15s to £1 per head. Medium cows had an erratic sale at last week’s ates. Extra prime heavy bullocks sold to £ls 12s 6d; prime heavy, £lO 7s 6d to £ll 17s 6d; prime medium, £9 2s 6d to £lO 2s 6d; light and medium, £7 7s 6d to £8 17s 6d; extra prime cows and heifers, to £lO 7s 6d; prime heavy, £7 2s 6d to £8 7s 6d; light and medium, £4 12s 6d to £6 12s 6d.

The quality of the 1900 sheep entered did not average up to last week’s standard. Medium to good shorn wethers were in better supply and slightly more in favour than woollies. There was a drop in values at the conclusion of the sale, but values generally differed little from last week’s average. Extra prime heavy woolly wethers, to 34s 3d; extra prime heavy shorn wethers, to 27s 9d; medium heavy woolly wethers, 28s to 30s; medium heavy shorn wethers, 23s to 255; light and medium woolly wethers, 24s to 275; light and medium shorn wethers, 20s to 22s Cd; extra prime heavy woolly ewes, to 29s 9d; extra prime heavy shorn ewes, to 23s 6d; prime heavy woolly ewes, 24s to 265; light and medium woolly ewes, 21s to 235. The entry of 100 fat lambs was barely enough for trade requirements, and, on an average, last week’s rates were firmly maintained, the top price being 31s. An entry of 150 stoi’o cattle was forward, comprising several pens of wellbred steers, which made late rates, the top price being £8 2s for a pen of four and five-year-old steers, while other lines sold from £4 15s to £7 13s.

A largo entry of 163 fat pigs made satisfactory prices at the opening of the sale, but the final races showed a drop of 5s to 10s on opening rates. Heavy baconers sold to £4, and best quality porkers to £2 15s. The entry of 126 store pigs met with keen competition and values were firm throughout: Large stores sold to 325, and suckers from ! 14s to 20s Gd.

PAHIATUA SALE. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd., report on the weekly Pahiatua sale held on Tuesday:—Mixed-ago wethers (small), 20s; four-tooth ewes, 21s Gd ; f.m. ewes, 15s Id; wether hoggets, 18s 3d; owe hoggets (small), 20s 7d; springing cows, £4 and £3 ss; store cows, £1 Is.

LEVIN SALE. The Levin stock sale on Tuesday proved to be well up to previous standards, good yardings being presented in all sections, record entries coming forward in the pig section. Prices were, generally, on a par with late rates, although showing a slight easing in certan sections, but there was, on the whole, little variation. Following are the prices received : Pigs.—Weaners, 10s, 12s Gd, 13s, 14s 6d; slips, 15s, 16s 6d, 18s, 19s, 21s; stores, 235, 24s 6d, 255, 275, 295; light pork, 30s, 31s, 32s Gd, 335, 355, 35s 6d; medium, 375, 38s, £2; heavy, £2 ss, £2 6s, £2 Bs, £2 9s; baconers, £2 10s, £2 12s, £2 17s; choppers, £2 6s, £2 17s.

Sheep.—Wether hoggets, 18s 9d ; fat ewes, shorn, 16s, 16s 3d, 19s; prime fat lambs, 22s 3d; fat woolly hoggets, 22s sd, 22s 9d, 23s 6d, 24s 6d; ewes, extra good, lambs at foot, 355.
