WANGANUI SHOW

The Wanganui Agricultural Association’s diamond jubilee show opened yesterday in splendid weather when there was a large attendance of the public. The outstanding feature of the show is the New Zealand chilled beef championship, the principle aimed at being breed cattle suitable for the English chilled beef market. The section was divided into five classes in accordance with the five defined breeds—Herefords, Shorthorns, Aberdeen Angus, Red Polls and crossbreds. The event was judged by Mr W. Marks, of W. and R. Fletcher (N.Z.), Ltd., Auckland, Mr R. A. Maansell, of T. Borthwiek and Sons, Masterton, with Mr S. S. Timbs, late of Smithfield, now of Wanganui, as umpire. The placings on the hoof gave pride of place to Mr J. J. Taylor (Westmere), who was exhibiting in the twoyear Hereford steer class. Twelve animals from the five classes were placed by the judge, and will all have chances to compete on the hooks at Inilay and also at Smithfield, London. The placings were : J. J. Taylor (Westmere), two-year Hereford steer. J. Wyley and Sons (Kaunagaroa), three-year cross steer. Femie Bros. (Kakatahi), three-year cross steer. W. LI. Reed (Nukumaru), three-year Shorthorn steer. J. Wyley and Sons, throe-year cross. E. M. Cranstone (Fbrdcll), threeyear Hereford. E. M. Cranstone, three-year Hereford. E. M. Cranstone, three-year Hereford. J. Wyley and Sons, three-year cross. A. T. Hunter (Fordell), two-year Hereford. W. H. Reid, three-year Shorthorn. G. R. Forster-Pratt (Palmerston North), lied Poll. Mr J. J. Taylor’s champion steer also took the prize for the best “baby beef” beast.

Placings in the various chilled beef classes were as follow:

DISTRICT SUCCESSES.

District exhibitors to participate in the awards were as follow:

G. R. Forster-Pratt (Palmerston North) secured first and second awards in the Red Poll classes for yearling bull, first for two-year-old heifer, first and second for yearling heifer and first for pen of two heifers. In the fat classes the same exhibitoi won a first award (or fat cow, most suitable for shop purposes. In the Milking Shorthorn classes the Weraroa exhibitor and breeder, R. V. Brown, won first awards for yearling bull and bull calved since July 1, 1934, cow of 4 years and over, two-ycar-old heifer and heifer calved since July 1, 1934, in addition to the championship for females and two second awards. In the Jersey classes, Mrs W. G. Shannon, of Palmerston North, secured two second awards with G'enbury Beauty and thirds with Ku Ku luy Emperor and Gleuburn Bronze, whde Mr Shannon took a second with Mountain Meadows.

In the horse events, J. J. Waller, of Awapuni, tied for second in the maiden hunters with Gaswyn, and took second and third prizes with Glendowie and Gaswyn respectively in the leaping competition, steeplechase style. In the pony, 14.2 and under class, Miss D. Young, Kairanga, took first place with Larrikin and second place with Silver.

In the fat sheep classes, J. F. McKelvie, of Carnarvon, secured four firsts, four seconds and three thirds. In the Romney Marsh open classes, W. H. Gibson, of Kiwitea, took the firsts and two seconds, while A. L. Wheeler, of Marton, took four firsts in the open classes and three firsts and two thirds in the natural condition classes.

The Wanganui Kennel Club conducted an exhibition in conjunction with the show and in the Scottish terrier classes J. Taucher, of Ashhurst, took first prizes for best dog or bitch! puppy under 12 months, and puppy of oposite sex to the open class winner.

T. Hocking, of Palmerston North, took first awards in the rough-coated collie classes with puppy under 12 months, Colonial-bred and junior, best dog or bitch, and best puppy. In the Cocker Spaniel classes, Mrs P. S. Lacey, of Whakarongo, took first awards for best of opposite sex in the 0.T.8. classes and best dog or bitch in black Cocker Spaniels, also annexing the championship. Mr Lacev took a first in the open class 0.T.8.
