FROM STABLE AND COURSE.

(By “Binocular.”)

Awapuni etables were represented by winners at Auckland, Christchurch, and Waipukurau on Saturady.

The performance of Henry of Navarre in winning the hurdle event at Waipukurau with 11.12 on his back was a very good one, for although the opposition was poor he was not considered ready to run a hard race.

As Symcony has won £730 in stakes since being sold to Mr N. Smith, the Awapuni filly has fully repaid her purchase price. The disparity of 151 b in the weights proved too great a handicap on the second day at iticcarton.

The records disclose that during the past decade only two winners of the Welcome Stakes at Iticcarton have been asked to contest the Irwell Handicap on the second day. In 1930 Tea Chat won the Welcome Stakes with 8.5, but 8.13 in the Irwell wa 3 sufficient to halt him, Solvent beating him at an advantage of 211 b. Last Saturday Symcony won the Welcome Stakes with 8.0, but her weight rose to 9.3 for the Irwell Handicap, and she was beaten by Silver Sail, who had an advantage of 151b'.

Penelopo, who had displayed very promising form at the Wellington fixture, failed to fulfill expectations at Iticcarton where, after running only a fair third in the Wolcome Stakes, (ilio was outside the money in the Irwell Handicap, In her stead another prospective star. Silver Sail, has nppoarod on tho horizon.

The northerner Galilee, who had been hailed as a champion after his narrow victory ovor Symcony at Ellerslie, was nearly brought tumbling from his pedestal by Fairfax at Avondole, greenness costing the Limond filly tho race, On the second day Fairfax was mado favourite for the Nursery Handicap, but was left at the post, so this half-sister to Jonathan has still really to prove herself, While he is deficient in inches, Round Up, tho full-brother to Bodylino, might develop into quite a useful three-year-old, for he is not far below the top flight of two-year-olds, having now run two thirds in_ strong company at Trenfham and at Iticcarton. Of late Bodylino has been staying on in promising style, and as Round Up is built on more generous lines than his elder brother, ho should bliow the greater improvement as he grows older. By waiting over after the Ellerslie fixture for the Avondale mooting, the Awapuni mentor, R. E. Hatch, did not find his stay unprofitable. Rereatu, who is now well up in the weights, had to be content with a second in the Flying Stakes on the oponing day, and was beaten out of the money on the second day; but Rerepai, on the other hand, returned to the winning list, capturing the Champion Hack Plate, which carried a stake of £225 to the winner, and ran second to Gay Blondo in the Avondalo Guineas. Since coming to Awapuni at the beginning of September the pair have won £ll7O in stakes—Rereatu £695 and Rerepai £475. With K. Voitre absent in Australia, the battle for the leadership on the jockeys’ championship table is now being waged between L. J. Ellis and W. J. Broughton. The former’s three successes at Riccarton on Monday raised his total to 26. whereas Broughton’s figures are 24. In two instances on .Monday the Palmerston North horseman had to be content with second place to Ellis, and it would seem as though last year’s champion, all going well, will repeat his effort of the 1933-34 season.
