TENNIS IN AUSTRALIA.
IMPROVING THE STANDARD. AUCKLAND, April 9. The standard of tennis in Australia is definitely improving, according to Mr Gerald Patterson, formerly an Australian representative tennis player and champion at Wimbledon, who passed through Auckland on the Mariposa on Saturday. With his wife and two children he is making a leisurely trip around the world and will spend some time in England. Mr Patterson expressed the opinion that Australia had a good chance of regaining the Davis Cup this year, prodded her representatives produced tlieir best form. McGrath and Quist, he said, were both promising players who should be able to hold their own in any overseas tournament. At the end of last season Crawford was not up to standard, probably owing to the fact that he had played too much. However, with beneficial rest on the voyage to England, he should strike form again and render a good account of himself. Reference to the sudden death of the captain of the Japanese Davis Cup team, Jiro Satoh, was made by Mr Patterson, who said the deceased player was one of the greatest exponents of the game Japan had produced. His stylo of play greatly resembled that of Perry, the English champion. While on his last visit to Australia, where he was very popular with the followers of the game, Satoh defeated Crawford on several occasions, although in the semi-finals of the Commonwealth championship he was beaten by H oilman.
