WOODVILLE

(From Our Own Correspondent.) WOODVILLE, April 6. Mrs F. Hurley, Oxford Road, has left on an extended holiday in Wellington and the Wairarapa districts. A painful accident was sustained by Mr W. Curry, of Woodlands Road, when he was carting milk to the factory recently. One of the harness stfaps broke, allowing the shafts of the cart to drop to the ground. Mr Curry was thrown to the ground, the frightened horse kicking him severely on liis side and chest. It was found that- several of his ribs were broken, besides which he received severe bruises. Mr Curry is now progressing as well as can be expected. Weather conditions were perfect on Wednesday for the closing of the Woodville Croquet Club’s season. Mesdames McLachlan and McCarthy took charge of the games. Mrs McCarthy won the senior and Mrs Nicholas the junior games.. The president (Mrs Whitelaw) complimented . Airs

McCarthy on her success at the Dannevirke tournament, and accompanied her remarks with a personal gift. The McCarthy trophy was won by Mrs Whitelaw, with Mrs Pritchard runner-up. A good attendance of football players was evident at the Oddfellows’ Ilall on Thursday evening when the nomination of teams was discussed. Mr M. Murray was in the chair. It was decided to nominate junior, third and fourth grade teams for the Mauawatu competitions. The forming of a senior team was held over until the club members could see how many players were available.

The monthly meeting of the Woodville County Council was hold to-day, Mr M. O. Grainor presiding. The Hawke's Bay County Council advised that the Woodvillo County’s contribution toward the traffic inspector’s salary was £l7 12s. The chairman said it was very satisfactory to have the countv roads protected for the small sum of £l7 12s a year. The chairman stated that estimates amounting to £lll2 for earth- | quake damage in the county had been received from residents. Replying to a question, the chairman stated that to date 98.85 per cent of the rates had been collected. “This is a magnificent effort when it is considered that 75 per cent of the ratepayers are dairyfarmers,” he stated. The liability of the State Advances Office as mortgagee for freehold lands was referred to in a letter from the Waitomo County Council. The chairman stated that the matter was an important one and big issues were involved. Ho was of opinion that the question was one for the consideration of the executive of the Counties’ Association. —It was decided to reply accordingly. Mr C. S. Arinistead (Hopclnnds) wrote applying for permission to construct a gateway from tile Kumcroa Read into his property. Approved, subject to the approval of the engineer. The transfer cf 1242 acres in the Gorge survey district from Christina McLeod to Thomas Orr was approved. Advice of the following lodgments was received: Highways, sealing £660, maintenance £447. Raparapawai bridge £45: total £1152. To report of the engineer on the main highways was adopted.

The Hospital authorities reported to-day that the condition of Mr William Youle. of Feilding, who suffered a brokenleg recently in a motor cycle fall while on the way to Rongotea, is now quite satisfactory.
