CLAIMS FOR THEIR STATES. Two new Australian Governors have already started to dispute which is the pre-eminent State, and which the finest capital,' but neither mentions Sydney or New South Wales, according to a London report. Lord Huntingfield, the new Governor of Victoria, at a farewell luncheon, described Victoria as the pre-eminent State, and Melbourne as the finest capital in any Dominion. The Dominions Secretary, Mr J . H. Thomas, said he was delighted that Victoria, after three years, again recognised that a Governor was a real link with the King. It would be a sad day when any State failed to realise the value of that link. Sir Archibald Weigall, former Governor, congratulating Major-Genera! Winston Dugan, the new Governor of South Australia, who was present, said that, everyone envied him his luck. After the luncheon. Major-General Dugan, in the course of conversation, declared: “It is all very fine for Lord Huntingfield to describe Victoria as the pre-eminent State, but, in truth, that honour belongs to South Austra“l hope my duties will not confine me too much to Adelaide. I am most anxious to meet the men outback, especially the Diggers.”
