EXCHANGE-TO REMAIN

MR COATES’S PLAIN STATEiM ENT,

ALTERATION NOT JUSTIFIED.

(By Telegraph—Special to Standard.) "WELLINGTON, April 6.

“Nothing has oocurred to warrant any alteration of the rate of exchange,” said Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates (Minister of Finance) when asked if this question was under review by the Government. He was reminded that the Prime Minister had stated that the high exchange would continue till the end of the present export season, the questioner suggesting that tins inferred reconsideration in June.

“You are asking me if there is likely to be any effect as a result of that statement. My reply,” continued Mr Coates, “is that I know of nothing which has occurred in connection with the country’s economic situation that would justify, a change in the rate, or that leads me to even in the remotest sense suggest that there should be a review of the whole situation.”
