APPEAL TO CABINET.
RATEPAYERS OF THAMES. Per Press Association. THAMES, Sept. 18. A crowded meeting to-night of Thames borough ratepayers, the Mayor (Air S. Ensor) presiding, and Mr A. M. Samuel, M.P., attending, was addressed by several prominent businessmen on the question of taking steps to secure an early relief from the burden of rates. It was generally agreed that the relief hoped for under the Borough Commissioner Act had not been given, and it was resolved, by an overwhelming majority, as follows: “The ratepayers, having made an honest endeavour to carry out their agreement with the representatives of the Thames bondholders, and believing that the present burden of rates will be ruinous to Thames property-owners and to the security of bondholders, resolve to put their financial position before the Prime Minister and Cabinet, and earnestly pray that the Government will intervene with a view to assisting all parties and inimediately promote legislation appointing an independent tribunal to decide what measure of relief can be given in the rating year and what further relief should be given for the subsequent year and years.”
