PERSIAN INCIDENT
UNION JACK HAULED DOWN. “QUITE UNAUTHORISED” ACTION. ASSURANCE TO BRITAIN. (United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraplf.—Copyright.) (British Official Wireless.) Received September 18, 10.30 a.m. RUGBY, Sept. 16. An answer lias been received from tlie Persian Government regarding an incident at Basidu, Kislim Island, in the Persian Gulf, where recently some Persian naval officers landed and pulled down the Union Jack.
Basidu has been in British occupation for 100 years, and in response to a protest the British Government has been given an assurance by the Persian Government that the action was quite unauthorised. Regrets at the officers’ behaviour have been expressed and the Union Jack replaced in position by the British Navy. A visit is at present being paid to friendly sheiks of the southern Persian Gulf liy the destroyer flotilla of the Mediterranean Fleet.
