IS. “I have spoken to an officer who was beside Lowndes at Bullecourt in 1917 and lie tells mo that all the young men who were in that bombardment never fully recovered,” said Rev. Jasper Calder, who was called to give evidence for Leonard Hilton Lownes at the Police Court. Lowndes was charged with trespassing on his wife’s house while separated, and with boarding trams without money. Rev. Mr Calder said defendant enlisted at 16) and six months later went through Bullecourt. He had since suffered from acute shell shock, He was all right, except when bouts came on periodically. “When ho took liquor he went nearly insane. Mr Calder also told how defendant had more than once telephoned at midnight and had said ho could feel himself slipping and was afraid he might do himself some injury. After a consultation, the Magistrate adjourned the case for three months to allow defendant to return to a relief camp.
