TERMS OF PROBATION
YOUTH’S ALLEGED BREACH. Neville Henry Tillett, aged 19, appeared before Mr J. L. Stout, S.M., in the Alagistrate’s Court on Saturday on a charge of failing to comply with the terms of his release on probation. He pleaded not guilty. Senior-Sergeant WhiteliousG said that, last year, accused had been convicted of the thelt of a radio set and ordered to make restitution of £2O, as well ns to come up for sentence if called upon at any time within twelve months. He had automatically been licensed on probation but bad only paid back £l. He appeared to do no work, and treated the terms of his probation and the order of the Court as a joke. Evidence was given bv H. Cole, probation officer, that accused had only refunded 22s (3d. He had boc-n ordered not to loaf about the streets at night, and not to frequent billiard rooms. On September 13 witness found him playing billiards in a saloon. Replying to Mr T. F. Belling, who appeared for accused, witness said Tillett appeared to spend all his time walking about the streets. He was not a very satisfactory probationer. Mr Wlirtehouse gave evidence that he had frequently seen accused about the streets at night, or standing in doorways for no particular object. Accused had also given his mother trouble. Counsel said accused could not get into a camp and could not register as unemployed. What was he to do? Mr Whitehouse said accused did not want work, and proceeded to stale the position. “I object to that,” interjected accused’s father, who was sitting in the back of the Court.
Ho was peremptorily ordered by the Alagistratc to sit down. Counsel said it would be in accused’s interests if he went out into the country and earned his own living. The ease was adjourned for a fortnight to enable accused to obtain country employment which was stated to be available for him. The Mngis trate intimated that if accused did not take it lie would be dealt with, and that would probably mean a period of Borstal detention.
