REACHING RECOVERY

AMERICA’S DIFFICULT TREK. COALFIELD UPRISINGS CONTINUE. MORE WORKERS EMPLOYED. (United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received September 16, 12 noon. WASHINGTON, Sept. 15. There was a recurrence of the wholesale violence on the Pennsylvania coalfields where 16 persons, including the deputy-sheriff, were shot and more or less seriously wounded. Governor Pinclrot, of Pennsylvania, has intimated that he is prepared to declare martial law if necessary. Federal conciliators have been sent to the scene to attempt to reaqli a settlement. The Labour Secretary, Miss Francis Perkins, estimated to-day that 750,000 workers had returned to their jobs in August and that the pay rolls in 89 of the principal manufacturing industries of the country had increased by 12,000,000 dollars, indicating “the success of the N.lt.A. and other efforts for industrial recovery.”
