Despite the depression, Sir George Newman, chief medical officer of the Ministry of Health and the Board of Education, states that Britain is healthier than at any other time in history. The people are learning more of the art of living, better housing, increasing. sobriety and the extension of public medical services. The death rate from tuberculosis lias fallen from 92 per 1000 to 69, and pneumonia from 149 to 113, but Sir George Newman warns that continued unemployment may produce mental instability in adult men and prolonged under nourishment of women and children.
