BIG ENGINE OFF RAILS.

CLOSE TO TRUNK LINE. MISHAP AT, TE KUITI. TE KUITI. Feb. 8. A railway derailment which nearly caused a blockage of the Main Trunk Line took place in the Te Kuiti yard early last night. The big new “K” engine, when preparing to leave with the 7.50 good trains for Frankton, left the track at the northern loop where it connects with the main line. The engine, which weighs 140 tons, was disconnected at the time and travelling slowly. It buried its front wheels in the gravel ballast, and, turning at any angle away from the main track, left about nine inches clearance for the Auckland-Wellington express to pass on arrival at Te Kuiti at 10.30.

On the, arrival of the locomotive foreman from Hamilton, steam having been kept up on the derailed engine, and with tire additional power of two other engines, the heavy “K” was again restored to the track. The only traffic inconvenience caused by the derailment was the delay at the departure of the goods train for Frankton. which left at 9.30. The damage to the track has been repaired.
