EVENTS AT SPORTSGROUND. There was a large attendance of the public at the Sportsground last evening v.tien the combined amateur ath.etic ciuus com ducted their usual weekly meeting. the following are the results ot the various 100 yards handicap.—J. Dynes (Byds) 1, J. Willoughby t9j is, J?. *°rrt U°) °- " on by B S Grade 1 Ufile cycle.—l. Davey (90)1, r ß Essex (50) 2, E- Woollett (120; 3. Won bv two' lengths. Tune, 2.24. 'BBO yards handicap.—E. Hoddmott (65) 1 Macdonald (25) 2, Cowling (40) 3. Won bv three yards, 'lime, 2.1 1-5. Bovs’ 2-lap cycle race.—Jameson 1, Johnson 2, Murphy 3. Time, 1-45. A Grade 1 mile cycle race.—E. Lawrence (scr) 1, E. Astin (45) 2 R Lawrence (85) 3. A close finish., lime, 2.26. 1 440 vards relay.—Js.ta. loa 1, Old Boys 2. Won by two yards. lime, 49 2-5. Two mile open cycle race.—H. Essex (130yds) 1, A. Oockburn (170) 2, O. Prichard(24o) 3. Won by half a length, lime, 4 'One 'mile cycle championship.—First heat: E. Lawrence 1, E. Astin 2, J. ( asev 2 Time, 2.36. Second heat : M. Gardner 1 R. Walker 2, N. Dixon 3. Time. 241 3-5. Final: E. Lawrence 1; E. .Astin 2 J Casey 3. Lawrence won by inches from' Astin and Casey, Gardner finishing fourth after riding half of the last lap on a danuged wheel, tune, 2.33 2-5. The final sprint up the straight proved the best so far this season, and shows that the riders are in their best form. R. Walker also rode a splendid race, being the only one to ride with broad wheels, and his performance was a good one. M. Gardner rode his best race this season, and showed he is capable of holding his own in championship eventß.
