INDUSTRY IN BRITAIN.

The Ministry of Labour announces that on January 23 there were approximately 9,285,000 persons in_ employment in Britain. This was 17,200 fewer than the month' before and 76 000 fewer than the year before. The decline in employment occurred chiefly in industries which normally experience a setback in January, or which the principal are building public works, contracting, _ distributive trades, the tailoring industry, and hotel, boardinghouse and road transport services. The most important industry in which a.n improvement was shown was coalmining. , . On the same date the arumb-er -o men, women, boys and girls unemployed, temporarily stopped, ana normally* in casual fmployment t0ta11ed*2,903,065. This 179^8 more than the number on the legis a month ago. The figures include all persons registered as ’V I®™ 1 ®™ whether in receipt of benefit or trails tiona.l payments or not.
