WOODVILLE, Fob. 8. Mr and Mrs L. Whittington have returned flora a holiday at i’araparauinu. Mrs 0. Nathan, of England, is staying with Mrs W. 11. Nelson, Woodville. llev W. G. Davidson and Mrs Davidson, and Mr and Mrs Alan Davidson, have returnccl to Woodville from Paraparauinu. , friends of Mrs L. Brandon, of Woodville, who has been sin inmate of the ~^ nn . c ‘ virke Hospital for several weeks, will be pleased to learn that she has recovered sufficiently to return to her homo. A motion. of condolence with the family of tne late Mr John Harding, ol Woodville, was passed by the congregation of the Pahiatua Methodist Church on Sunday evening. Rev. W. B. Pickering stated that the rostrum in the Makornako Church was the gift cf the late Mr Harding. f J he congregation stood in silence for a few moments as a mark of respect. Harvesting operations and other farm work given to Woodville unemployed men have now eased considerably. Fresh applications have been made to the secretary of the local unemployment body during the past day or so. , The monthly meeting of the Women s Institute was held on Tuesday afternoon. Mrs W. 11. Nixon presiding over a good attendance. A new member was heartily welcomed. Arrangements for the celebration of the eighth birthday of the institute were finalised, the function to take the form of a garden party to be held in the grounds kindly lent by Mr and Mrs R. Johnston. Members were reminded of the approach of the annual meeting, and nominations for the incoming committee were asked for. A competition for the best programme for this year was not completed, but it. is hoped to announce the winner at the birthday party. The chief

interest centred round a demonstration oi brass work given very ably by Mas Rising (Makornako Institute), the specimens o: her finished work being much admired. Mrs Rising also showed a jar with eilective decoration in paper mosaic and explained the method used for this work. Miss Sargent (Makornako) delighted the audience .with two elocutionary items, a country woman’s version of If> and an extract from “The Merchant of Venice. ’ Votes of thanks to Mrs Rising and Mis« Sargent were nio\od by Mrs 11. I . Horne and carried by acclamation. A band cif volunteer hostesses took charge of the afternoon tea arrangements, and the meeting closed with the singing of the National Anthem. .
