EXTRACTS FROM “STANDARD.” FEBRUARY 9, 1903.
The Public Works Department had accepted a tender of £2005 for the erection of the Woodville Post Office. Stud Romney Marsh rams were stated to have been sold in the Palmerston North district during the month at an average price of 15 guineas, the top price being 20 guineas. During the same period 44 flock rams had been sold at an average of £5 16s 4d. The tug Kapiti, bound from Glasgow. was en route to Wellington. Eight hundred deaths were reported to have occurred at the Friendly Islands through a tidal wave disaster. It was stated that only those who climbed into the tall trees escaped. The Society Islands also were devastated bv a' tidal wave and hurricane, 1000 natives being killed. A cable message from Brussels stated that the trial of Rubino, for attempting the life of the King of the Belgians, was proceeding. The prosecution showed that accused contemplated attacking King Edward and other Sovereigns.
