MID-WEEK CRICKET

MIXED FORTUNES EXPERIENCED CENTURY TO HOOKER. The mid-week cricket competitions reached a further stage yesterday afternoon, when good weather made the matches enjoyable. Mixed fortune was the lot of the batsmen, who in some instances were most successful, and in others failed to reproduce their usual form. Hooker (P.D.C.) was the leader for the day in this department, distinguishing himself by reaching 101 when he retired. The successful teams were E.D.C., Optimists and Unemployed A. P.D.C. BEAT UNEMPLOYED B. P.D.C. secured a comfortable first innings win over the Unemployed Club’s B team. They compiled 238 in their visit to the crease, Hooker retiring after reaching 101 in fine style as an opening batsman. Other good scores were those of Blumont (28), Clayton (25), Findlay (23) and Oliver (22 retired). Unemployed compiled only 60 in their first innings, Orr (18 not out) being the only double figure scorer. They fared better in their second innings, when they made 58 for the loss of tour wickets, Findlay (22 not out) and Redward (13) reaching double figures. The following are the scores:— P.D.C. OPTIMISTS BEAT SERVICES B. An easy 3-point win was secured by Optimists over the Combined Services B team. Optimists declared their innings closed with only six wickets down for 211 after a period of bright batting which wrecked Services’ bowling averages. Edlin, who opened with Goodjohn, retired when he reached 51. Oliver (48) was unlucky in missing the half-century mark. A series of “ducks” was responsible for Services replying with only 56 runs. Gray (16), Elliott (14) and Kempson (12) were the only men to reach double figures, erstwhile good batsmen failing to shine. The detailed scores are as follow: OPTIMISTS.
