RACING NEWS

FORM AT FEILDING.

(By “Binocular.”) Awapuni lias presented three maiden ■winners in succession—Bee Acre at Levin. •Jicau Gallante on the opening day at Feilding. and Senegal on tile second day. By reason of bin commanding physique, JOeau Gallante came in for considerable attention, and this Australian-bred gelding should go on to much greater things, lie cost his owner-trainer, Mr G. W. (New, 140gns in Australia, and Wednesday’s stake was his lirst return. Senegal races in the interests of Mr is. McK. Duncan and is an inmate of L. Knapp's stable at Awapuni. lie is a bay gelding by Nigger Minstrel from Kintem, who was by Autumnus from Nicotine, a member of the Ban Rau family which produced some good horses. Boaconsliold, who ran an excellent race at Levin, displayed still further improvement on the second day at Feilding, and it was only after a strenuous clfort on the part of Voitro that he landed Senegal homo in front of Beaconsfield. Tho latter’s owner-trainer, Mr G. W. New, was thus prevented from returning tho winner of the maiden race each day. Beaconslield is one of tho few offspring of the defunct Diogenes, who was a particularly good horso, from tho Grown Imperial II mare Imperial Molly. Tho Arrow-smith gelding Blacksmith enjoyed a wonderful record last season When he was given 21 starts, winning eight races, running second on five occasions and third six times, being thus outside the money in only six instances. This season he has still to annex a majorstake, but in five outings to dato has run ’two seconds and two thirds.

Okopua was taken south to tho New Zoaland Cup mooting where he contested hurdlo and lrighwcight overits without any material success. However, tho oxJierience apparently proved beneficial, for le won really well both days at Fcild■ing. Whereas at Kiccarton ho was toiling in tho rear in his races, lie ns well placed throughout on tho opening day at Feilding, although ho roverted to his earlier tactics on tho second day when he lost ground in tho middle stages. As he is not very big, tho poundages ho will now be required to carry may make his tasks all tiio more difficult.

Taranaki had the honour of supplying the winners of the two principal events on the opening day, and it is stated that a big sum of money was won thereby. Tho New Plymouth mentor, K. Johnson, was a sliado unfortunato in that ho did not win tho doublo with his representatives, for lloyal Bengal beat all but Orapai in the Flying Handicap. Had Royal Bengal won it would have been a case of tiro one owner and the one trainer supplying tho winner of tho handicap and the sprint, for Mr A. Lile owns both Tigerism and lloyal Bengal. An excellent performance was registerfed by tho runner-up in tho Aorangi Trial Plato when transferred to hack company on the second day. The horse in question, Tiger Guiu, finished very fast from the rear at Iris first essay and, with 22lbs olf his back on the socond day, beat a good set of hacks over u mile and a distance. After a disappointing visit to tho New Zealand Cup meeting, Arrow Lad recouped his connections by capturing the St. (Andrew’s Handicap on tho second day. It was remarkable that the Arrowsmith gelding and High Faultin’, who attended one another home twelvo months previously, should have again filled the places this year. Whereas Arrow Lad ranked as the fnvourito last year, it was High Faultin’ who was the public’s first fancy cn this occasion. Tho New Zealand Cup winner of 1931, Spearful, ran a very fair race in the Feilding Cup to finish fiftli after being in the centre of the field for tho major portion of tho distance. On the second day ho attended Tahoma throughout and was in front halfway down tho straight, but then weakened to bo beaten into third place. That performance indicates .that tho Greyspear gelding is coming back to his best and he should gather in some stake money during the holiday racing. Two candidates for tho Feilding Cup, (Grand Jury and Gay Court, rather disappointed their supporters. The former -was hemmed in on the first day, but even fivlicn lie did work free he did not threaten any real danger. On the second day an apprentice was substituted and the Grandcourt gelding retreated in the 'betting to again finish well back. Gay Court was badly drawn each day. I-lis rider made a good deal of use of him on tho second day to secure an early position, but the Gainscourt gelding could riot maintain the effort.

Souchong, who is by Arausio from that ■well-known brood mare Suratura —tho dam of such brilliant performers as Verbosity, Dissertation, Kaiti and Kaihoro —has always shown a great turn of speed over *hort distances. In tho Feilding Stakes,

when required to race under weight-for-age conditions, he gave ISilhs in weight to Midinotte and just failed by tho narrowest of margins to heat (ho Limond filly home. He met the filly on 16jlb lictter terms on the socond clay over an extra furlong, hut instead of stopping at the end of five furlongs as many had anticipated. tho chestnut saw out tho full journey in brilliant style to run tho distance in 1.12 4-5. Million, winner of tho Oroua Nursery, is proving himself a very useful colt. After winning tho Debutant Stakes at Wanganui, ho ran seconds in the Wellesley Stakes and the llosencath Handicap at TTentliam prior to capturing tho Musket Stakes at Ellerslio. A half-brother to High Finance, Alyson, Anthonie and ltachol (dam of Rabbi and Kozan), ho cost his owner 65gns. at the Trenthum snles. Fleeting, a half-sister to his dam (ltebekah), produced the local colt, Inflation.
