THE WAR MENTALITY

MR CHURCHILL’S WARNING: DESCRIBED AS BRILLIANT SPEECH. ONE-SIDED ARMED PEAGE PREFERRED. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received November 25, 9.10 a.m. LONDON, Nov. 24. Mr Winston Churchill’s warning in tho House of Commons, that disarmament was proceeding along wrong lines and only resuscitating the war mentality, is described as the most brilliant, comprehensive and constructive of the speeches delivered. He emphasised that, though armed to the teeth, France was pacifist to the core. “I would rather see another ten to twenty years of one-sided armed peace than war between equally well-matched Powers,” he said. “The war mentality is arising in certain countries. There is hardly a factory in Europe not prepared for war, but w'isdom and skill may avoid war in our time. “I base my confidence firstly in the strength of the French Army; secondly, in Russian preoccupation in the Far East owing to the enormous increase in Japanese armaments; thirdly, tho general detestation of war in atl countries not dissatisfied with the Versailles Treaty. It would bo safer to reopen questions like the Danzig Corridor and Transylvania than wait until vast combinations equally matched confront each other.”
