RACING NEWS

THE LEVIN MEETING

AN ENJOYABLE FIXTURE. (By “Binocular.”) Tho annual meeting of tho Levin Racing Club invariably proves to be an enjoyablo day’s outing for racing enthusiasts 'from Wellington an.d as far north as Palmerston North and Wanganui. Although the course is somewhat of tho saucer-liko variety, its surface is good and candidates oro ollered quite excellent racing conditions. Tho fields, without exception, liavo filled particularly well and the winner is quite obscured in several instances. The club will operate the system of threo dividends in fields of nine or more' horses, but tho minimum investment unit will be 10s. The gate charges aro most reaaonable._For the convenience of patrons from this end a special train will leave Palmerston North at 9.55 a.m. Proceedings to-morrow will . open with the Maiden Race, of six furlongs, wherein 19 horses are carded. There is not a great deal of form to guide patrons, but 800 Acre, Capo of Good Hope, King Thomond, Maypay and Milnrow have shown some promise, while Bonnie Yale and Cancfielcl aro likely improvers. If he has built up in condition King Thomond would play a part. However, preferences may bo for: Bee Acre, Maypay, Milnrow. There is a distinct possibility that Warzone will not fulfill her engagement ir. tho Manakau Hack Hurdles, and in her absence Manifesto will be tho solo lOst candidate. Nevertheless, the chestnut gelding will bo difficult to dispose of. Tho jumping capabilities of the remainder aro more or less unknown, but should Bright Song repeat her efforts in private slio would play a part. Day Loss and Gambler liavo liad some experience in the rolo, whilo Headland has given promise in liis schooling efforts. The favourite may come from: Manifesto or* Headland. Quito si few of the candidates for the Weraroa Hack Handicap have little recent form to commend them, but if presented in good racing trim Navalio and

Chief Savage would* probably dominate tho situation. Captain Dan lias performed fairly well oil occasion, and Clangor -has also run fair races. Some interest will be centred in the appearance of tho exsoutherner, Chilo ( but probably ho will be short of racing. Capo Fair, Gold Gleam, Late Jest and Tranquillity aro likely improvers and the final selections may be mado from : Chief Savage, Gold Gleam, Capo Fair. Tho Gisborno representative, Aiguilio, is topweight in tho. Mako Mako Hack Handicap with Broken Rule —who showed promise as a two-year-old—on terms with the speedy, but uncertain Wasteland. Then conies Hick Whittington, and the home-trained perfprmer will not lack for friends. Lower down arc such useful sorts as Sir Pomba.l, Forest Stag, Purse, Miss Cavendish and Aroma. There is plenty of room for a surprise. A trio in request may prove to be: Hick Whittington, Miss Cavendish, Wasteland. The Levin Handicap has attracted a field of eight runners and Chopin represents winning form, although 9.0 may prove quite enough for one of his inches. Arikira’s mulishnoss has lost him his friends meantime, whilo Little Doubt has disappointed his party of late. However, ho may prove capable of making amends. Pahu’s form has been consistently good, but Gay Court, despite his rise of 71bs, should beat him again. Arajean is ono who might present real danger and tho order of favouritism may be : Chopin, Arajean, Little Doubt. Two of the big handicap candidates, Gay Court and Joie de Val, again figure in the Lake Handicap and their intentions aro unknown. Capetown, who attends the aforementioned pair in. the haifdicaps, was a good performer last season, but ho has been off tho sceno for some time and will have to be taken largely on trust. Lyrical, Saltpot, Fondle, Sujiguino King, Flower and Kahunoko cannot be overlooked, and with Gay Court and Joie de Val absentees, those sought after may bo: Kahunoke, Flower, Saltpot.

Double engagements are again in evidence where tho prospective runners in the McDonald Memorial Handicap are concerned. Fit and welL Equitant would rank as tho favourito. Hampden and Trojan Melody have both a fund of da*sh, but well handled Dick Whittington, Sir Pombal and Wasteland might all run good races. Preference will no doubt be given to: Equitant, Trojan Melody, Hampden.

The concluding event —tho Hack scurry —finds 21 engaged. The safety number for the course is 20, but no doubt a division will be avoided on the day. Positions at the barrier will play a material part. Solitaire 11., Good Hunting, Headmaster, Right Bower, Arena, Interlocutor and several others uIL have early «peed. A likely trio to be supported comprises: Headmaster, Good Hunting, Right Bower.

AMMON RA AT CAMBRIDGE.

PROPOSED TRIP TO AMERICA. CAMBRIDGE, Nov. 23. Tho racehorse Ammon Ra arrived at Cambridge last night, in charge of W. Jarvis, junr. He is now quartered at W. Jarvis, senior’s, stable at Lealnington. Ammon Ra looks surprisingly well, and Jarvis said he hopod his charge would got completely over his trouble. He is to bo spelled for several months. There was nothing definite about Ammon Ra going to America. If ho did go he would not race at Agua Caliente.

RACEHORSE DESTROYED.

COLLIDES WITH A POST. DUNEDIN, Nov. 23. Mr A. H. Fisher’s filly Bachelor’s Idol was working tho wrong way on tho tan at Wingatui this morning, and tried to run off at the opening leading off the track, with tho result that she hit a post and hurt herself so severely that it was necessary to end her sufferings. Slio was beautifully bred, being by Shambles from tho Gainsborough mare Bachelor’s Picture and would have been valuable for the stud.

JOCKEY’S ACTION.

CASE OF L. H. WATSON. TERMS OF AGREEMENT. Somo time ago Leonard H. Watson, a jockey, instituted proceedings against the Auckland District Committee of the Now Zealand Racing Conference for £IOOO damages for disqualifying him for life in connection with what is known as tho Royal Survey case. When the matter was to have como before tho Supremo Court on November 15 last, it was announced that it had been arranged to submit the whole of the mnttor to an appeal committee of tho New Zealand Racing Conference, all technicalities being waived. The agreement (save tho Auckland Star) arrived at between tho parties provides:— (1) This action is to bo abandoned.
