CENTRAL RELIEF.

MEETING OF COMMITTEE. The Central Relief Committee met in the Council Chambers yesterday afternoon, Mr A. E. Mansford presiding. Also present were Messrs A. J. Phillipj>s, P. S. Larcomb, W. R. Kells, R. L. C. Aitchison, Rev. J. D. McArthur and Mesdames Mansford, Hayward, Trask, Palmer, Sinclair and Cunninghame. Reports from trie various sub-com-mittees in connection with the monster auction sale were received, 1 and the results of the canvass so far made were considered satisfactory. A depot will be opened in King Street, next to the Dominion Auctioneering ComS, for receiving donations of goods, mg, produce and sundries. It was reported that arrangements were well in hand for the house to house canvass of the city on Wednesday next between 7 and 8 a.m. Householders who have anything which they can spare, and which can be converted into ready cash, are asked to have same ready when the motor cars call. The sale will commence at 11 o’clock on Thursday morning and will continue until everything is sold. Luncheon will be obtainable at the sale for sixpence. A return was submitted showing that 1900 bags of wood had been sold and the firewood depot is now closed. The secretary reported that the average number of families assisted during the last four weeks was down to 400, a slight drop since last meeting. The pound parcel scheme, contributed by housewives, and which at times resulted in up to £2O weekly in value coming into the committee’s assistance, had now dropped very considerably—in fact to about £2 worth weekly. The depot would welcome contributions of lice, sago and butter, and housewives are again invited to assist in this parcel scheme. Since the boot repairing depot opened five weeks ago over 145 pairs had been repaired. Accounts totalling £2BB 17s were passed for payment. The committee expressed its thanks to the artists who kindly donated pictures for the art union. Thanks to the ladies were also extended for selling the tickets at the stall at the Royal Show. It was hoped to arrange for a further effort to sell tickets before the art union was drawn on December 24. The practices on Monday nights in the All Saints’ schoolroom of the oratorio “The Messiah,” it was stated, were being well attended by singers. The oratorio is to be presented at the Opera House on December 7.
