TENDERS FOR BANANAS.

PREMIER’S EXPLANATION. (By Telegraph.—Special to Standard.) WELLINGTON, Nov. 23. A series of questions concerning the last tenders for the purchase of Samoan, bananas from Wellington, Auckland, Christchurch and Dunedin, raised by Mr W. E. Barnard, were answered by Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes in the House to-day. Mr Forbes said that tenders were received from all centres and one offer was accepted, but not for the reason, as suggested, that the department preferred to deal with a single purchaser. The number of Southern tenderers was not three, and it was not the policy of the Government to disclose the price payable. One offer was accepted for the single reason that it was the best obtainable.
