MID-WEEK CRICKET

OPTIMISTS BEAT UNEMPLOYED. P.D.C. ACCOUNT FOR SERVICES. Although a cold wind was in evidence in the closing stages of the afternoon, a fast wicket and outfield were offering for the mid-week cricket at the Sportsground yesterday. Optimists retained their position at the head of the table by defeating Unemployed, the latter eleven narrowly avoiding an innings dofeat. Combined Services, on the other hand, lost ground as a result of having to submit to defeat by P.D.C., the latter eleven exceeding Services' total for the loss of two wickets, although they went on to complete their innings. With a surplus of players available a further match was arranged between the Combined Services and Unemployed B teams, and there is a probability that in the near future there will be six elevens participating in the series. OPTIMISTS v. UNEMPLOYED. At their first visit to the wickets Unemployed fared badly against the Optimists’ bowler, the side being all out for 53 runs, only two members returning modest double figures. Three bowlers were tried by Optimists and Rice secured five wickets at a cost of 26 runs, while McGregor and Sommerville took three and two respectively at low cost. Thompson and Edlin gave Optimists a good start, and the former went on to make 70 before being dismissed. McGregor, who succeeded Edlin, also topped the half century and, like Thompson, found tire boundary line on eight occasions. With four wickets down for 171 runs, Optimists declared their innings closed —Evans being not out with 25—and sent their opponents in again with a view to forcing a four-point victory. Unemployed made a ihiich better showing at their second essay, Hancock compiling 33, while four other members made double figures. However. with but one wicket to fall Unemployed required four runs to avoid an innings defeat and Webby saved the position by registering a six, following it up with a four before being beaten after compiling a nice 22. Time prevented Optimists taking strike to make the nine runs necessary to give them the additional championship point, and they had to be content with a three-point win. Following are the detailed scores: OPTIMISTS. THE TABLES TURNED. In the opening round Combined Services accounted for P.D.C., but at the return meeting yesterday the latter eleven turned the tables, actually winning with eight -wickets in hand. Combined Services had first use of the wicket, but their usually reliable batsmen failed, Heaphy and Angus being the only ones to top the twenty mark, and when the final wicket fell the total was standing at 131, Coekery and Simmonds having been the destructive agents for P.D.C. Opening with Brace and Hooker, P.D.C. had 57 to their credit when the partnership was broken, Hooker being taken in the field when 37. Simmonds and Brace carried on the good work, and when the newcomer went the scores 'were almost level. Brace finally retired at 61, while Coekery followed his skipper at 27, victory having been attained. The innings was continued, and the other members failed badly with the result that from two wickets for 140 runs, the side were all out for 184. Following are the detailed scores:— COMBINED SERVICES. Unemployed had first strike to make 145, Mortenson compiling 58 and Leng 39.
