THEFT OF PAPERS.

INCIDENT AT DANNEVIRKE. Per Press Association. DANNEVIRKE, Nov. 23. In connection with the proficiency examination papers for one of the Dannevirke primary schools there was an unusual experience yesterday, the papers being stolen from the rooms in an hotel occupied by Inspectors McCaskill and Bissell by a relief worker from a camp, who is said to have wanted money. Two attache cases containing the examination papers were stolen. The first, taken from Mr McCaskill’s rooms, was subsequently left at a shop in another part of the town. The thief then returned to> the hotel and took Mr Bissell’s bag. The owner arrived on the scene and, recognising his property, secured it after a struggle. He endeavoured to take the man downstairs but had to leave him and get assistance. The thief tried to get array by a firpescape but was intercepted' by the licensee and handed over to the police. The examination papers were recovered intact.

For the theft, Richard Reeves got three months’ imprisonment on each of two charges.
