HOROWHENUA.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) OTAKI, Nov. 21. The shop day, held on Saturday for the benefit of relief workers, resulted in £5 being raised. Vegetables, etc., sold readily while competitions were well patronised. Mesdarncs Bowden and Nicolson were in charge. Mrs D. McCurdy, of Dipton (Southland), who has been staying with her cousin, Mrs C. B. Smyth, of Otaki, returned to the South on Saturday. A well attended meeting of poultry farmers of Otaki, Uautore, and Te Horo districts was held on Thursday evening. Mr \\V Griffiths was elected to the chair and in his opening remarks explained that the reason for calling the meeting was to discuss the present amendment to the Poultry Act which is at present before Parliament. Mr Signal spoke on the Bill and explained it fully, pointing out that if the Bill was passed" a further burden of taxation would be forced on the poultry industry. Furthermore tho creation of a Poultry Board and the necessary expense of that board by way of salaries, travelling expenses, etc., would have to be borne by the poultry men without any promise of gain, he said. A petition to members of Parliament was drawn up and signed by all present, objecting to the Bill in its present form and emphatically disagreeing with the formation of anv poultry board with or without control. It wa*« considered that the present Act is quite sufficient to deal with the poultrymicn’s requirements and that tho poultry division cf the Agricultural Department was quite capable of handling any emergency that may arise. , . A rink from the Manakau Bowling Club (Cowan, Green, Cotton and Evans) visited Otaki on Saturday and indulged in bowls till rain sent them under shelter. The players hope to make another visit at an early date. Manakau Club was .represented at the opening of the Paraparaumu Qhib. A match for the Stars took place on Saturday when Nilsson and Bailey (skip) defeated Nicolson and Beauchamp (skip), 25 17.
