SUBSIDY NOT PAID

BEQUEST TO HOSPITAL BOARD.

PROVISION ON ESTIMATES.

RETROSPECTIVE LEGISLATION.

Advice was received by tho Palmerston North Hospital Board this afternoon, from tho Department of Health, that the subsidy was not to bo paid on the Halford bequest of £3OOO, under the ruling that tho subsidy was not payable on voluntary contributions or bequests received by Hospital after March 31 last, even thougn the board had becomo entitled to receive such bequest prior to that date. “I felt extremely disappointed when this information was received,” stated the chairman (Mr J. K. Homblow), “as tho bequest was made prior to the economy cuts, and provision had been made on the estimates for the subsidy. The department had passed the estimates. Unless special provision is made for the subsidy of £ISOO, tho board is going to be placed in an awkward position. Furthermore, unanticipated expenditure of an urgent nature is being incurred.” It was decided that the chairman should wait upon the Minister of Health to press for the reinstatement of tho subsidy, which had been promised to the board formerly.
