Gaisford (Marton) and Mrs H. Colhnson (Manawatu). The New Zealand champion ultimately prevailed 2 up and 1 to play, but Mrs Collinson strongly contested her opponent’s supremacy throughout and played a solid game before she submitted to defeat on the 17th green. Miss Gaisford led 1 up at the turn for home and still had this margin at the 13th. After the sixteenth Miss Gaisford was dormy two; the Htli hole was halved and she won the championship 2 up and 1 to play. Many of the shots were played in tlio teeth of the gale and, considei’ing tho exceptional conditions, both players were very steady. The final was followed by a large gallery. Colonel J. H. Whyte was the umpire. Going to the first hole Mrs Collmson landed her tee shot in the bunker and chipped short across the green rn getting out. Miss Gaisford found tho bunker to tiro left, and came out too strongly. Mrs Collinson Jusl failed to sink a long putt. Miss Gaisford took three putts against the wind, being short twice. However, Mrs Collinson had taken two shots to get out of the bunker, and Miss Gaisford won the hole 4—5 to again lead. They halved Strang’s in six, Airs Collinson playing a very weak second and hitting her third into tire rough, while Aliss Gaisford also struck trouble. Aliss Gaisford was in the bunker to the left, but was down in 4—5 to turn for home 1 up. Both drives were over tho road at the 10th, but Aliss Gaisford’s next two shots were weak. She sank a 4ft putt to go down in four, but Airs Collinson holed nicely in three. They were now all square. Both sent nice drives I to the 14th, which was halved, Aliss Gaisford narrowly losing the full award with a putt which stopped on the lip. Airs Collinson badly duffed her second on the way to tho loth in the face of the gale. She played a decidedly weak third and took five to the green, compared with three well-balanced strokes bv her opponent, who won the hole comfortably 5—7, to increase her lead to 2 up. . At tho 16tli the wind carried both well to tho right over the adjoining green. Aliss Gaisford landed in the bunker, but chipped a long and difficult shot into the wind to land nicely on the green. Airs Collinson likewise played a beautiful shot. Aliss Gaisford then encountered a stymie and tho hole looked a certainty for Airs Collinson, but she astoundingly missed a 12-inch putt and Aliss Gaisford was dormy two. AVell over the back of the green with her second at the 17th, Miss Gaisford made a perfect approach with her third. Airs Collinson had to sink a putt for four to keep the game alive, but failed.
