MANAWATU BOXERS

SELECTION FOR CHAMPIONSHIPS.

MEETING OF ASSOCIATION.

The executive cf : the Manawatu Boxing Association met last evening, Mr E. It. Wimsett presiding. Others present were Messrs Stubbs, Hamilton, Whitford, Hatch, Candy, Arnott and Evans (lion. secretary). Apologies for absence were received from. Messrs Barnes, Purves, Watchorn, McGrath and Aitcliison.

Selections of boxers to represent Manawatu at the New Zealand championships at New Plymouth at the end of this month were made as follow :

Light heavyweight.—H. Reeves (Pa hiatua).

Welterweight.—M. Candy. (Palmerston North).

Lightweight.—F. Hopkins (Palmerston North).

Featherweight.—T. Holden (Palmerston North).

Mr B. O’Keefe was appointed trainer of the team and Messrs AVunsett and Hatch were appointed to represent Manawatu at the annual meeting of the New Zealand Boxing Association. Messrs G. Watchorn and E. Wimsett were nominated as judges. The opinion was advanced that any remit put forward at the New Zealand Boxing Association conference for the lifting of the restriction against the matching in New Zealand of foreign coloured boxers should not he supported. 'J’he association decided to endorse Dunedin’s claim for the next New Zealand championship fixture. On account of the purse sought by Archie Hughes for a bout with Ted Oxley at Palmerston North it was decided not to enter into negotiations for a professional bout in the meantime. It was considered that the prospects did not warrant tire risk of the association incurring a financial loss, and that instead encouragement should he given the amateurs by the promotion of a number of tourneys.

The secretary reported that the gate takings lor the Manawatu championship tournament were £4l 7s 9d and the expenses £3l 6s 3d, leaving a net profit of £lO Is Cd. It was decided that the Manawatu and West Coast A. and P. Association be informed that the terms for the use of the Showgrounds stadium were not acceptable, and to ask the committee for payment of accounts incurred in connection with the dismantling and removal of seating. Should the association wish to stage a tournament at the Royal Show, a sub-committee would be prepared to discuss arrangements with the committee.
