RACING NEWS

FROM STABLE AND COURSE,

(By “Binocular.”)

It its understood that B. H. Morris will ride members ef F. D. Jones’s team at Ashburton on Saturday.

Gaine Carrington is the ninth New' Zealand winner ot the Chelmsford Stakes in the past 16 years. King’s Jest is being used im a hack on his owner’s (Mr J. D. Ormond’s) property at Wallingford. Applcdore i<3 not returning to the Dominion with Make Up and Landmark, having been purchased by a Victorian owner. While Manawhcnua’s performance on Saturday of making two appearances in an afternoon was considered unusual in Australia, New Zealanders would not consider it strange by any means. Chromadyno is in work at Cambridge. The Quin Abbey—Uranium gelding will do his next racing at Avondale. Chromadyno made a favourable showing in his opening oltort of tho new season when he run second to Baroscope in the open sprint at tho Pakuranga meeting. Good reports are to hand concerning tho progress made by John Bull and Great Britain, newcomers to racing, wfio arc in It Hannon’s team at Cambridge. Both geldings are half-brothers to York Abbey, being by Little England —Curcarua. John Bull is a five-year-old, and Great Britain a three-year-old. The first meeting of the Auckland season having been a profitable ono, the committee of the Auckland Trotting Club lias made a slight increase in the stake money to be given at the October fixture. It is tho committee’s intention to continue adding to the stake money, provided the attendances and totalisator revenue are at all satisfactory. A feature of the racing at The Curragh on Oaks day was the success of the veteran jockey, W. Barrett, on Silverdale in the July Selling Plate. Barrett, whoso achicvc|nient6 was loudly cheered is about 45 years of age, and rode Ids last winner in 1920. During the war years Barrett, who was in tho first flight of Irish riders, won the Irish Derby for Senator Parkinson on JBrst Flier, a distinction ho had secured . two years earlier, in 1915, on Ballaghtobin. Early speculators on the New_ Zealand Cup aro asked to believe that Nightmarcn will return in time to contest this year s event, and already bo is being regarded m certain quarters as a very dangerous not so, with Shatter attending him closely for favouritism. Gay Crest, Fast Passage, Jaloux, Admiral Drake, Mitierval and Spearful, according to one authority, arc the moot likelv to challenge tho other pair if they are weighted according to anticipations; then came Concentrate, Great Star, Antique. Ra.lllo and Retract. When Morena won the Styx Hurdles at Ricca-rton oil August 13 he had 11.2. Nine of Spades was third with 9.13 and Dainty Ways fourth with 10.11. Morena had five lengths to spare from Jayson. In the Hurdles at Geraldine on September 22 Morena. has 11.3, Nine of Spades 9.8 and Dainty Ways 10.3. In tho Sydenham Hurdles which immediately preceded the Stvx, Antrim Boy won with 9.13 while Captain’s Gift was unplaced with 11.5. Ihe latter has 121 b tho belter of the weights at Geraldine, the respective imposts being 11.11 and 12.5. . . , , , Demonstrations against tho judges decision are not unknown here, but they never go to the lengths reported m the following: “At the Clan-wood (Durban South Africa) meeting recently, a section of tho spectators went beyond nocituig attet the judge gave the last race of the day to a horso thfy reckoned was beaten. He was followed out of tho course, and assaulted, the police having to go to his aid. The hurdler Callapat has rejoined the active brigade at Hawera, states a laranaki writer. At tho beginning of the winter season he showed wonderfully improved foim and won at the Egmoiit and Wanganui meetings in easy style. He was then taken across to the Hawke’s Bay circuit, b t never ran a decent race. He has been spelled since then, and it remains to be seen whether the rest has had the desired effect. ROSEN STILL WINNING.

Ben Rosen, the Australian jockey, who is doing so well at present ill h ranee and England, had another success in England when he rodo Sir A. Butt’s Perfect Night to victory in tho five furlongs Molyncux Cup at Liverpool on 20th July last. It is quite a probability that he was also on the Gimcrack winner, Young Lover, as tins colt is owned by Sir A. Butt. . . Rosen had had only four mounts in all up to 20th July in England, and lie had won three of them, both his earlier successes having been on Totaig. Ho was to have ridden at Goodwood a week alter tnc. Liverpool meeting. In France, his winning way has been unchecked and although ho .lid not start riding till we on in the season, it looks as if lie jvtU bo near tho top of the French list at the end of the year. It is said that.' lie is the only jockey in Franco this year whose mounts show a profit on a level stake.

MIX-UP IN WEIGHTS.

HORSES SIMILARLY NAMED,

SYDNEY, Sept. 14. There lias been a mix-up of the weights of two horses of tlio same name, Autopay, in the Cantata Stakes which lias caused complications. Owing to a printer’s error in tho published list, the Victorianowned Autojiay was weighted with 9.2 and the Now ZeZaland Autopay 8.1, a.s a result of which tho former was scratched .

It now nppoars that the handicapper’s original list shows the position was reversed. Tho Victorian should have been 8.1 and the Now Zealander 9.2. The secretary of tho Victoria Racing Club points out that this is tile only list recognised, therefore the New Zealander eari-ies 9.2 in tlio Cantala Stakes. Ho regrets that the mistake was duo to a printer’s error in tlio club’s booklet.

PHAR LAP’S COLOURS

The famous racing colours, carried to record-breaking victories by the wonderful New Zealand-bred racehorse Phar Lap, wore brought to Auckland from San Francisco on Monday by Mr and Mrs M. Gearin, of Sydney (states the New Zealand Herald). Oil liolialf of tho owner. Mr D. J. Davis, they handed tho colours, consisting of a red jacket with green sleeves and a black caj>, to Mr R. A. McLean, of Auckland. It is believed that Phar Lap’s colours will ho carried by the three-year-old gelding Pillow Fight, now in C. Morse’s stable at Takanini, and stated to have been bought on behalf of Mr Davis. Pillow Fight is out of the English-bred maro Week End, by Night Raid, the sire of Phar Lap. He was bred by Mr J. B. Stnrky, of Amberloy, North Canterbury, and was sold as a yearling for 250 guineas. Later, lie became the property of the late Mr W. G. Stead, of Hawko’s Bay. After Mr Stead’s deatl,i he was bought by Mr McLean. There liavo been contradictory rumours as to who is tho actual owner, but tho position has been clarified by tho above announcement and by reason of tho fact that application has been made to the Now Zealand Racing Conference for the registration of the change of ownership from Mr McLean to Mr Davis.—“ Binocular.”
