AOKAUTERE.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) AOKAUTERE, Sept. 14. The Aokauterc Bachelors' Ball was a rery enjoyable function. There were a large number of visitors from the surrounding districts. The decorations, of coloured streamers and greenery, made the effect very pleasing and the floor was in good order. The music was supplied by Mr R. Brill and his helpers. Messrs J. Hopcroft and VV. Hunter officiated as M.C.’s. The novelty dances were won by Mr E. Saunders and Miss Doherty and Mr I)e Malmancho and partner. Tho young ladies of tho district are holding a meeting to arrange a return danco at an early date. At the September meeting of the Aokautero Women’s Institute there was a splendid attendance, including several visitors. Mrs Brcreton, tho local school teacher, attended with the senior pupils to tako advantage of the demonstration for the afternoon —on wool spinning and carding. Tho president, Mrs Groves, extended a hoarty welcome to all present and specially mentioned Mrs Shannon, who had come to givo a demonstration with tho spindle. Mrs Shannon was followed with keen interest as she demonstrated the treatment of _ the wool from its raw stafo to the finished article. Members were very enthusiastic and it is expected that tho hand spindle will bo introduced into many homes as a result of Mrs Shannon’s visit. Mr 3 Brereton moved a hearty vote of thanks to Mrs Shannon for her able demonstration, and also thanked tho institute for having given her the opportunity of bringing her pupils to the meeting. She hoped to introduce spinning as a hand craft at tho school. The competition for the afternoon, jumbled letters for kitchen utensils, was won by Mrs Shannon. The prizo was donated by Miss Lucy Gough. A dainty afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mrs Grevcs, Mrs Durden and Miss Gough. During an interval, Mrs Shannon led tho members in community singing and this was much enjoyed. Mrs W. F. Field and Miss F. Vowell wero appointed delegates to tho half-yearly council meeting to bo held in Woodville in October. During the afternoon, Mrs Greves, on behalf of tho institute, made a presentation to Mrs Lester Field, whose marriage took place recently. Mrs Groves exprescsd the good wishes of members for tho futuro happiness and prosperity of Mr and Mrs Field ond hoped they would have many happy years of married life. Mrs Field suitably acknowledged tho gift and was accorded musical honours.
