OBITUARY.

MR ANDREAV BUCHANAN.

Profound regret will be felt throughout the Manawatu district at the death of Mr Andrew Buchanan, who passed away at his home in Featherston Street, yestorday, after a comparatively brief illness. For 37 years the deceased gentleman had resided in Palmerston North. He had commendable civic pride, an abundance of energy and enthusiasm, was keenly interested in local body work, closely identified with public affairs in the district and an ardent student of politics. Until three years ago, when he suffered a severe illness, Mr Buchanan was a member of the Rotary Club; lie was one of the original members of the Citizens’ Lunch Club and one of its first committee members. Ho took an active interest in the Palmerston North Y.M.C.A. from the period of its inception and was a member of the first board of directors. He was a member of the Masonic fraternity in New Plymouth and retained his association with the Craft in Palmerston North. He was also a member of the local Farmers’ Union, to which he rendered valuable service, and a member of the Manawutu-Oroua River Board, in whose affairs he was closely identified right up to the time of his passing. The lato Mr Buchanan, who, in addition to his interest in public affairs, was a Justice of the Peace and a firm supporter of the Presbyterian Church, was born in Glasgow, and while an infant came to New Zealand on the sailing vessel Gananoque, of 785 tons, in 1861, with many other passengers, who were subsequently destined to play a prominent part in the commercial life of Auckland. His father served in the militia in the Maori AVar. Mr Andrew Buchanan was educated at the Auckland Grammar School, and after learning tho wholesale business in his father’s warehouse he was for many years engaged as a commercial traveller. He was married in 1880, Mrs Buchanan having been born in Geelong, AGctoria. Ho founded and was superintendent of tho Epsom Presbyterian Sunday School and church services. Taking up several wholesale commercial agencies, lio-left Auckland in tho year 1892 with his family and resided for a short timo in New Plymouth, then in AVanganui and finally settled in Palmerston North. In 1896 ho purchased tho present property in Featherston Street to make his home there. Following his retirement from commercial life less than two decades ago, Mr Buchanan*ostablished his present well-known pedigteo Jersey herd. AVith Messrs S. It. Lancaster und F. E. AVatson ho founded tho New Zealand Jersey Gattlo Breeders’ Association. Togethor they convened tho first meeting and sot on foot an organisation which has boon responsible for tremendous improvements to the dairy herds of New Zealand. Deceased continued to take an active interest in tho affairs of the association right up to his demiso and a number of the Jersey cattle ho bred have proved to be the foundation of some of the choicest cattle in New- Zealand and Australia.

Xn December, 1918. the late Mr Buchanan unsuccessfully contested the Palmerston North seat as a candidate for Parliament against Messrs J. A. Nash and J. Thorn at tho by-election consequent upon the death of Mr D. Buick.

Two years ago Mr and Mrs Buchannn celebrated their golden wedding. The deepest sympathy will be extended to tho liereaved widow and family. Tho daughters are Mesdames F. Ower (Eltliam), C. B. Peart (Raglan), W. Burrows and David Miller (Palmerston North), W. Pollard (Dunedin), Misses Violet and Mavis Buchanan (Palmerston North). The sons are Messrs Antlrew It. Buchanan (Kairanga), Ronald H. Buchanan (Feilding), lan V. Buchanan (Kaimata, Taranaki) and Alan G. H. Buchanan (ltangiotu). Messrs G. Buchanan (Paeroa), J. Buchanan (Takapuna) and E Buchanan (Avondale) axe surviving brothers of deceased.
