NO GIFT OF GOLD KEY.

OIL PAINTING SUBSTITUTED. The practice of presenting a gold key to the public man who officially opens a new public building was varied by Air Kingsley Henderson, of the firm of architects who designed and supervised the erection of the new ward at the Queen’s .Memorial Infectious Diseases Hospital at Fairfield, Alelbourne. “I think,” said Mr Henderson, in presenting to the Premier of Victoria, Sir Stanley Argyle, an oil painting, “that every scrap of gold should be used in our currency and credit, rather than in the manufacture of gold keys.” Acknowledging the gift, Sir Stanley Argyle said, amid laughter, that he was confident that if the need arose he would be able to gain admittance to the hospital without a special gold key. “I agree that all gold should be used to the best advantage,” he added. “If you had given me a key of gold the precious metal in it would no doubt havo been placed permanently in cold storage, useless, earning nothing, like the gold stowed away in vaults in the United States.”
