LEGACY OF £lo,ooo.

ALL ABSORBED BY TAXATION.

The Dean of Newcastle, New South Wales, Rev. W. H. Johnson, announced a few days ago that the Newcastle Cathedral would not receive a single penny of the bequest of £IO,OOO, for which provision was made in the will of the late Mrs Annie Fowler Berkeley. Application was recently made for probate of the will, and it was then disclosed that the bequest had been made to the cathedral for the purpose of establishing an endowment fund to provide a stipend for the Dean of Newcastle. Information had since been received, however, that death duties and taxation have absorbed so considerable a proportion of the estate that it is improbable that funds will be available for any of the general legacies under the will. Dean Johnson says that in these days of depression charities are not profiting at all by the generous intentions of people who had made their wills in more prosperous days.
