Tho question of the burden lias been discussed again and again, and it is more evident to-day than ever that clubs aro being taxed out of existence and will never bo able to function satisfactorily without further considerable permanent relief.” Tho reinstatement of the, double totalisator, tho telegraphing of investments to meetings, and the publication of dividends would be of very considerable benefit to clubs, added tho president, and would largely eliminate illegal betting. DENIAL OF STATEMENT.

LICENSING OF BOOKMAKERS.

Per Press Association. DUNEDIN, Sept. 13. The statement made by Mr R, T. Michaels at the annual meeting of tho Takapuni Jockey Club that it was common knowledge that every Labour member in Parliament was fighting tooth and nail to have bookmakers licensed was givon an emphatic denial by Mr J. W. Munro, Labour meinbei for Dunedin North, to-day. Mr Munro said that he was sure that the Labour Party us a whole did not wish to license bookmekers. It find not discussed either this question or any amendment of the gaming laws. The statement made by Mr Michaels was probably based on tho fact that a private Bill for the licensing of bookmakers had been introduced by Mill. T. Armstrong, Labour member for Christchurch East, hut as many Labour members were opposed to the measure as were in favour of it. He, personally. would not vote in favour of it, and ho knew that several Labour members were as much opposed to it as ho was.
