Hunterville is to have a new Presbyterian church. The old church has been in use for over 40 years. Rev. C. F. Pierce, M.A., formerly headmaster of the Wanganui Collegiate School, is to be Rector of Standlake, the patrons of which are Magdalen College, Oxford.
D. J. Burgess, the jockey, who was injured when his mount fell in the Hunt Cap at the recent races at Awapuni, has recovered sufficiently to be discharged from the Hospital. The professorial board of the Auckland University College has decided to nominate Messrs Ledger William Crawley, 8.A., and Eric Percival Haslam, as representatives of the college for the Rhodes scholarships. After 36 years’ service in the Police Force, Sergeant J. Fitzgerald, of the Freeman’s Bay Station, has retired on superannuation. Sergeant Fitzgerald served in Hamilton, Kihikihi, Wellington, Geraldine, Temuka and Auckland. Mr A. H. Youle, who was compelled to retire from the field during the Rugby match, Manawlienua versus Hawke’s Bay, last Wednesday, was later found to be suffering from a fractured bone in the leg. He will be incapacitated for some time. Mr G. K. Hamilton, of Papatoetoe. has been appointed headmaster of the Auckland Normal School in succession to Mr E. Varley Hudson. Mr Hamilton was the first permanent headmaster of the Hokowhitu School, from 1924 until 1927, and afterwards proceeded to the Tauranga District High School.
Dr. E. C. Bailey, one of the Rhodes Scholars, returned to Auckland yesterday after being absent from New Zealand since 1920. "While at Oxford Dr. Bailey took his doctorate in philosophy for a thesis on the liability of torts written under the direction of Dr. W. Holdsworth, one of the foremost historians of law. At Oxford Dr. Bailey was president of the Raleigh Club, which was concerned with Imperial politics. There were 36 undergraduate members in it and 12 senior members. The club exercised a definite influence on Imperial thought. He was president in the summer time, during which there was held a dinner at which the speakers included the Lord Chancellor, Viscount Sankey, the Secretary of State for India, Sir Samuel Hoare, and Mr Malcolm MacDonald, Under-Secretary of State for the Dominions.
