RELIEF WORKERS.
COMPULSORY CAMPS OPPOSED,
GISBORNE, Sept. 12. As a sequel to unrest over married men being drawn in a ballot for clearing scrub on backblock farms, a publio meeting was held to-night, a thousand being present. Mr D. W. Coleman, M.P., and Mayor, presided, and after addresses had been delivered bj’ several speakers the following resolution was carried unanimously: “That this public meeting of Gisborne citizens declares its unconditional disapproval of compulsory camps for relief workers, married or single. We hereby call upon the Government to curb the tyranny of the Unemployment Board and declare that all the volunteers required can be obtained if the Government offers continuity of employment and a wage commensurate with a decent standard of living.”
