ENCOURAGING SIGNS.

TRADE IN UNITED STATES,

AUCKLAND, Sept. 12

Trade symptoms were very encouraging in the United States, said Mr Sidney Myer, of Melbourne, owner and managing-director of one of the largest department stores in Australia while passing through Auckland by’tho Mariposa after a business visit to America and Europe. “All metals have gone up in price; cotton is showing a very definite rise, and wheat and wool values are also improving. Moreover, higher values for primary products and meta-ls are influencing the secondary industries dependent upon them, as for instance piece goods, the prices for which are showing a distinct improvement in America. “There is evidence on all sides m America that returning confidence is inducing freer expenditure, which is one thing that is definitely going to cure unemployment. Confidence is the kevstone of tho whol©_ social, industrial and financial fabric. The depression was brought about because through a variety of circumstances people lost that confidence, became nervous, and. spent less or not at all, preferring to wait for better times. “There is now definitely a brighter outlook in tho world. The fear of worse times coming gone, let us hope, never to return. f lhe outlook is brighter, and at last people are no longer fearful of spending. “I am going back to Australia ten times more confident and happy than when 1 went away six months ago,” said Mr Myer. “It is now up to us to bring back prosperity quicker by continuing to buy and spend, for that alone is what will make the wheels go round and find employment for our people.”
