EXTRACTS FROM “STANDARD.” SEPTEMBER 10, 1002. In the Australia-South of England cricket match, the homesters (when play ceased) had lost 7 wickets for 400 runs (Hayward 106, Burnup 68, Abel 55, Day 44). Worn had been commenced on the erection of a new Fire Brigade station at Terraco End, the site being almost opposite the old one. The College Street School Ex-Pupils’ Association decided to form a cricket club and trophies for competition were donated. The Manawatu County Council had received advice that a commissioner had been appointed to apportion the cost of the new Shannon bridge to which the Horowhenua County would contribute one-third, less the Government subsidy. During August 7676 cwt. of butter, valued at £42,471, had been exported from the colony, 2128 cwt. of cheese, valued at £5340, 10,190 cwt. of beef, valued at 7t12,810, and 77,692 cwt. of mutton, valued at £84,417. In each case, except that of cheese, there was a marked decline in the value of the exports for the previous August. A New r York message stated that the Pennsylvanian coal strike had caused a shortage of 20 million tons, the Americans buying largely at Swansea, Wales.
