POLITICAL POSITION
INTER-PARTY CONFERENCE AT WELLINGTON. (By Telegraph—Special to Standard.) WELLINGTON, Aug. 24. The main development in the political position to-day was tho appointment of the Independment members’ representative on the inter-party conference, which was fixed to open at 2.30 o’clock this afternoon in the room devoted to the meetings of tho Public Accounts Committee. Tho Independents held a preliminary meeting, but owing to the temporary indisposition of Mr Fletcher a delegation was appointed to visit the member for Grey Lynn at his residence prior to making a final selection. A lengthy meeting is not anticipated to-day, as the first business of the conference is to consider the personnel of the experts’ committee of bankers, economists, Treasury officers, etc. Invitations will have to be issued and the committee will await their acceptance. In regard to the adjournment of Parliament, which is not. considered necessary by Labour, it is' understood that there might be a change of opinion if the other party leaders are able to demonstrate at the preliminary meeting that an adjournment in any case would be brief. The opinion was expressed By Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates to-dav that the entire investigation should not extend beyond a fortnight. '
