CYCLE ROAD RACING

THE PROFESSIONAL EVENT. JEFFRIES IN FORM. Cold riding conditions and a heavy return wind militated against the profesisonal road cycling race held by the Manawatu Counties’ Cash Cycling Club this afternoon over a course to Ashlnirst’ and back, but even considering these eonditjons good times were made by the riders. Results were as follow: A. L. Jeffries (Bmin.) 48min 25sec. 1 J. Christensen (9min.) 49min. 30sec. 2 L. Rosanoski (4min.) 46min. 32sec. 3 W. Collins (lmin.) 44min. 30sec. ... 4 Collins, off virtual scratch, could not catch the leaders. He found the handicap which he was conceding to be too great over a short course. Christensen made the pace practically throughout, but was overhauled in the final stages by Jeffries, who finished strongly to win by three lengths. Rosanoski was some distance behind Christensen, but secured second fastest time. There was a brief gap to Collins. Points for the Bouclior Cup now stand as follow: Collins 37 Rosanoski 29 Jeffries 20 McGill 9 Christensen 5 Eaton 3 Larsen 1 Next Saturday’s race will he over the same course.

AMATEUR RACE. WALKER SCORES. A further cycle road race in the Red Seal and Hendie trophies series, held by the Manawatu Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club this afternoon, drew seven competitors, a keen contest resulting in a win for E. Walker, whose points now take him un to second place, equal with N. Hyde, three points behind the leader on the table, E. Lawrence. The weather was dull, with a cold northerly wind which troubled the competitors on the first stage of their journev, which was via Awahuri, round the Kopane block and back to the starting point at the corner of P.angitikei and Featherston Street, a total of about 21 miles. From Awahuri the ridel’s had metal roads to contend with and a side wind which at times was troublesome. Walker and Tantrum caught up the limit man, Proctor, at an early stage, but when the riders further back came up Tantrum eased off, while Walker maintained his pace to the home stretch. N. Hyde and D. Hayes moved up on the Kairanga distance and the former made a race of it with Walker down the home run, but Walker prevailed by three lengths. Several minutes away came Hayes, C. Hyde and Lawrence, C. Hyde scoring fastest time. Proctor was a good distance back and Tantrum tailed the field. The plaeings were :■—
