MARTON, April 15. The balance-sheet of the United Ladies’ Hockey Club, presented at the annual meeting’ showed cash in hand and asset* at a little over £9. The club experienced a most successful season. The election of officers resulted as follows: Patron, Mr A. Stuart; president, Mr T. Barton; vicepresidents, Miss Illston, Messrs A. Aitken A. Wing, K. Fowler, L. Mcßeth, D. Thomson, 3. Mogridge, A. Grade, W. Jackson, F. Stent, D. Fogelberg, FrogIcy, ,R. Hcrcock, G. Sneddon; chaperone, Mrs T. Barton; manager, Mr G. A. R. Mclvoy; secretary, Miss M. Jackson; caplain, Miss M. Stent; vcie-captain, Miss Rita Green; delegate, Mr G. Sneddon; finance committee, the president and Messrs Aitken and Wing. Last Sunday was observed as the harvest thanksgiving at St. Stephen’s Church, Hawkestono Road, and Mt. View. The decorations lat St. Stephen’s were strikingly beautiful, the altar being a mass of white and red blooms. At tho west end the baptistry was also beautifully arranged. The pillars and windows were in keeping with the rest of the decorations. St. Stephen’s Chapel at Mt. View and the church room at Ilawkestone Road were very tastefully decorated. Though the fruit harvest was not so plentiful as last year, there was a fair supply of vegetables and preserves for the needy and the Church orphanages. The services at each church were well attended.

The Marton Borough Council met on Monday evening, there being present the Mayor (Mr F. Purnell), and Crs. Gregory, Barton, Moore, McKenzie, Sicely Gorrie and Langston. Tho overseer’s import on general work was adopted. The treasurer reported that the receipts to April 13 were £1874 11s Bd. The gas manager reported that 566,000 cubic feet of gas bad been manufactured for the past month, as compared with 533,300 for the corresponding month in 1930. A request from the Rangitikei. Rugby Sub-Union to use the park for the season was referred to a committee with power to act. Cr. Gorrie reported on tho suggested improvements to the Park with a view to laying down a 440 yards track. The council will meet the committee appointed by the Marton Athletic Club to discuss the matter. Mrs S. Coleman, matron at the refugees’ cam]) at tho Jockey Club’s hostel, was voted £2O for her sendees for two months. Cr. Cameron, applying for leave of absence, said be did not intend to seek re-election as a councillor. Tho Mayor, in presenting the balance sheet for the year ending March 31, 1931. complimented the town clerk oil tho manner in which -it had been prepared, and for the secretarial work in connection with the. unemployment committee Air McDonald was voted £lO 10s. . . Tho opening hunt of the Rangitikei Hunt Club’s season will bo held at Heaton Park on Wednesday, Alay 6. The following hunts have also been arranged: Saturday, May 9, “Shirley.” Gower’s Hill; Wednesday, 13. Carson’s Corner, BullsTurakina Road; Friday, 15, Closeburn; Wednesday, 20. “Glenmore,” Turakina Valley; Saturday, 23, Crofton Cross Roads; Weclnesdav 27, South Alakirikin; Saturday, 30, Bonny Glen Railway Station. The following nominations have been received for tho Marton D.H. School Committee: Messrs A. Strawbridge, R. S. Witney. FI. Fowler. E. Fletcher, W. F. Fade, W. G. Winchcombe, A. L. .Williams and Dane (sitting members) and Messrs H. Frederick, IV. R. Brant., L. Stubbs, J, C. Thomas, H. M. Wvsocki and Rev. Mr .Alitchell. Mr Reid is not seeking re-election. Tho'Marton Ladies’ Croquet Club held their closing day on Alondciy in fine, though cold weather. The attendance was large, and tho function was thoroughly enjoyed by all those present. The Milne Rosii Bowl was presented by the donor, Mrs Milne, to the winner, Mrs Neumann "(6 bisques). Mrs \V. F. Stevens (8 bisques) was runner-up. This trophy was presented for club singles handicap competition. Mrs Milne (patron) also presented trophies to the winners of other competitions during the season, as follows: Yankee tournament: Mrs True; doubles championship, Mrs True and Mi's Thomson; buttons. Mrs Melndoo and Mrs F. Williams. Winners of the afternoon’s competition were: Gloek croquet. Mrs H. Sutcliffe; golf croquet, Miss Clark, a visitor from Wellington; hopping croquet. Mrs True; hurry scurry. Mrs True and Mrs Williams. A delightful afternoon tea was dispensed. Tho death occurred recently after _ a short illness of Mrs C. J. Masters, of St. John’s Hill, Wanganui, and formerly of Huntervillc. Tho deceased lady, who was 59 years of age, was well known in Rangitikei, the family having resided in the Huntervillc district for many years. SCHOOL COMMITTEE. MARTON, April 16.

The monthly meeting of tho Marton D.H. School Committeo was held on Tuesday evening, the chairman (Mr Strawbridge) presiding. It was reported that tho matter of removing the heavy ornamentations and chimney tops of the building was at present before the board. The headmaster reported that school attendanco was good, the average at the primary being 280 out of 300, and at the secondary 99 out of 101. The unemployed working on tho school grounds had done splendid ■work, reported tho chairman, tho completed job making an improvement which enhanced the appearance and value of tho school. Accounts totalling £9 Is 3d were passed for payment. MAGISTRATE’S COURT.

The usual sitting of the Marton Magistrate’s Court was held on Wednesday

morning, Mr J. G. L. Hewitt, S.M., presiding. For disobedience of a maintenance order, and being £6 in arrears, H. Prichard was convicted mid sentenced to one month’s imprisonment. The noxious weeds inspector proceeded against A. It. Gibson for having blackberry growing on his property. A conviction was entered and a fine imposed of £l. Judgment by default was given in the following undefended civil cases: J. Carter v. E. Lauorts, ss; P. Lurujud v. J. Reeves, £2O 2s 6d; S. Andrews v. L. Wapp. £4 11s 9d; E. M. Holder v. R. Huston, £7 4s 6d; T. G. Ilarpur and R. A. Church v. Paraire Paikea, £33 10s. L. W. Mora was ordered to pay Morey and Morris £8 2s 6d, in default "eight days’ imprisonment. As the result of a complaint from Mr Castles, senr., of Wangaehu, the traffic inspector took proceedings against G. E. O’Halloran, of Wanganui, on the grounds that he failed to give way to complainant, who was endeavouring to get past defendant's car. After hearing lengthy evidence, the Magistrate entered a conviction and imposed a fine of £3. GENERAL. At the last meeting of the Marton branch of the Plunket Society, Mrs P. J. Sladden presided. The annual report and , balancesheet were discussed and passed, in readiness to be sent to the Central Council at Dunedin. Arrangements wore also made for the annual general meeting. An excellent report was sent in by Nurse Gorrie, of work done during March. The Marton Unemployment Committee met on Tuesday evening, the Mayor, Mr F. Purnell, presiding. The secretary stated that the number of registered unemployed on the list eligible for employment was 98. The names on the list were scrutinised by the meeting, a few being voted off. Mr F. W. Moore wrote expressing his appreciation of the happy relationship existing between the committee and himself, and stating the necessity for his resigning as registrar. owing to his retirement. He nominated Mr S. R. Holmes, acting postmaster, as his successor. The chairman took the opportunity of welcoming Mr Holmes and also Mr Condor, certifying officer at Turakina. Several applications for work were dealt with.

The Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union. Marton branch, held their annual general meeting on Tuesday afternoon, Mrs D. Simpson presiding over a large attendance. The president’s report referred to the splendid progress made during the year. The balance-sheet showed cash assets of £6O.

A special meeting of the management committee of the Rangitikci Rugby SubUnion was hold in Marton on Tuesday night, Mr W. E. Gibbons acting as chairman. There was a long discussion following the reading of a letter from the Marton Borough Council anent an invitation to attend a meeting of the council representatives and a delegate of the Hockey Association for the purpose of coming to an agreement, concerning gate charges to the Marton Park on Wednesdays. It was explained that the Hockey Association had recently secured permission to play on the western area in the park on Wednesdays, and, in asking permission to impose a charge for admission, had suggested that they be allowed to collect money from the gate above the main entrance. The general feeling of the meeting was such that, as the hockey matches were played only on Wednesdays, the gate takings would not bo very adversely affected, an dtho chairman was deputed to represent the union at, the meeting with power to act. Owing to the temporary absence of Mr A. V. Brown (treasurer) it was necessary to obtain the services of an acting treasurer, and it was resolved to appoint Mr K. A. \\ illiams to act in his stead. MARTON. April 17. Mangatcra (Dannevirke) fielded a fairly strong team but the local girls proved the winers by one goal to nil in a hockey match on Wednesday. Miss Betty Staples scored. Messrs Froglcy and Gracie were the referees. In the evening the Dannevirke girls were entertained at a dance given in their honour. Tho junior seven-aside football contest on Wednesday was won by Halconibe.
