OTAGO DEFEATED. EIGHTEEN POINTS TO EIGHT Per Press Associatioii. DUNEDIN, Aug. 30. Twelve thousand people watched the Rugby match between Otago and Wellington, which was played at Carisbrook ground this afternoon in fine, but overcast weather. Tlio game resulted in a win for Wellington by 18 points to eight. The ground was in good order, and an absence of wind made conditions ideal. Otago won the toss following an exchange of long kicks the game centred at half-way. Wellington worked down to Otago’s twenty-five, but there Giles intercepted a pass and the bail went out twenty yards from the Wellington line. Otago kept going, but Page line kicked clear and Cooke followed suit, sending Otago back to their own territory. The Wellington backs swept to the Otago line, where the visitors were penalised for a scrum offence. Play returned to Otago’s twenty-five. Oliver made a good run down the line but lost possession five yards from the line. McPherson, however, dashed along, picked up the ball and scored wide out. Heazlewood failed to convert.

Immediately afterwards, Foley started a rush at his own twenty-five, but it ended ten yards from the Otago line, McSkimming grassing Oliver. However, Wellington were not to he denied, and Oliver picked up and scored at the corner. Heazlewood again failed with the kick. So far, play had been in progress for ten minutes.

A long kick by Cooke put the visitors on the attack, but the home team cleared. Heazlewood secured and potted a good goal. Price was injured at this stage and was replaced by Deidrich. The next incident was a great solo dash from half-way, down the side line, by Cooke, who was collared as ho dived for the line and scored at the corner. Heazlewood converted with a magnificent kick. Nothing daunted, Otago swept down to the visitors' line, and, following a ruck, Here forced liis way over to score well out. Lindsay’s kick hit the post. Then the ball came out to Oliver, all the backs handling it. He made a magnificent run beat Lindsay with a nice swerve and scored at the corner. Heazlewood failed to convert. Sonntag and Hore combined in a nice forward rush to the Wellington territory, but a line kick by Cooke sent Otago back. Bradanovieh made a good dribble through to the Wellington line, but in the final kick the ball went out of bounds. • POLLOCK INJURED. - Ten minutes from time, Pollock was badly injured when ho collided with Giles. Mishandling by Lindsay let the visitors through again, McLean nearly scoring, but Otago forced again. Wellington swept down, but Otago worked back to Wellington’s twenty-five.. Little interest was taken in the concluding minutes of the game, which ended: — Wellington 18, Otago 8.
