THE WEATHER
GENERAL FORECAST. A fairly intense anti-cyclone is covering the Tasman Sea, and is moving on to New Zealand. Winds moderate to strong, south-easterly from Cook Strait northwards, gradually decreasing; elsewhere light to moderate north-westerly. Seas: Still a considerable swell between Akaroa and East Cape; otherwise smooth to moderate. Light to moderate winds in the Eastern Tasman Sea/; south-easterly in the northern portion and west to northwesterly in the southern portion; generally smooth to moderate seas. "Weather mainly fair to fine, but some scattered* showers still on the coast between Kaikoura and East Cape; unsettled and showery also in the far southern and south-eastern districts of the South Island. Cold temperatures with inland frosts. DISTRICT REPORT. VERY COLD NIGHT. The Government meteorologist wired to-day: The indications are for variable and moderate breezes, but moderate southerly winds prevailing at first, and moderate northery winds later. There is a prospect of fair weather. and milder conditions, but the night will probably be very cold, with frosfs inland. The barometer has Jittle movement. MANAWATU RIVER GAUGE. Noon. —3ft.
