BRIGHT BOXING
AMATEURS AT AWAPUNI. BOUTS LAST EVENING. Some very interesting amateur boxing bouts attracted a good attendance of enthusiasts to tlie Awapuni gymnasium last evening,' when the Awa/puni Club staged.its final tournament of the season. Mr It. Mackie had made his usual efficient arrangements and the bouts were very well balanced. Mr J. Louisson was referee, Mr J. M. Pearson announcer and Mr J. Weston Smith timekeeper. A. Yelverton, 9st 21b.', met W. Langdon, 9st. lib., and the Awapuni pair set off at a hard and fast clip. In the first two rounds they punished each other about the head and face with quick exchanges, of which Langdon had the advantage with a straight right. Toe to toe the pair slogged at each other with right and left swings and made it a willing mill. Yelverton, made a better showing in the final round, which was torrid, and the decision, a draw, was popular. A. Milne, Bst.. and J. Sweatman, Bst' 31b., both of Palmerston North, were evenly matched. They traded punches with effect, bub missed badly with swings on occasion. Milne scored with both hands to the head and face, but did not seem able to smother effectively when back stepping. Sweatman was apt to swing his blows and they_ were not as cleanly delivered as were Milne’s, who punched from the shoulder. The bout was full of "pep” throughout and Milne took the decision.
B. Homan (Palmerston North), Bst. 81b., had a less finished opponent in L. McLaughlin (Awapuni), Bst. 91b. Although the Awapuni boy did most of the leading in the first round, Homan repeatedly shot home his left to the face ‘and connected, at the same time evading most of McLaughlin’s swings. Tho latter kept up the pace and carried the bout to Homan in the next two rounds, but the Palmerstonian stood off and used hie left with effect. McLaughlin connected well on occasions, but Homan won the bout with a good points margin. ADD Boxing _ ffi s—s— being admonished by the referee and told to “shake it up,” B. Coughlan (Palmerston North), Bst lllh, and P. McGeady (Awapuni), Bst 131 b, made the final stages of the first round of their bout very interesting. They mixed it to better advantage in the second round, in which the honours were slightly in favour of McGeady. The latter endeavoured to force the issue in the last round and, although he scored repeatedly to the face, Coughlan made the most of his opportunities. He had taken the first round with a fair margin and had a sufficient lead to receive the decision. W. Sharman (Awapuni), 7st 41b, was too experienced an opponent for H. McKenzie Line), 7st 21b. The former waded into McKenzie from the initial gong and gave him little opportunity to retaliate, .although McKenzie, made as good a showing as possible and was game throughout. Sharman had a comparatively easy win. M. Paulsen, list 51b, gained his first decision when he met J. Pollock, list 41b. The pair provided the crowd with plenty of amusement. Paulsen waded in in his usual windmill style and maintained that attitude to win the bout on account of his aggressiveness. A blindfold event between McKenzie and Sharman concluded the evening and the item proved popular.
