EMINENT CONDUCTOR.
PROFESSOR KURTZ, OF STUTTGART. Professor Efrem Kurtz, director of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Stuttgart, was one of the striking personalities on the Niagara, which arrived at Auckland from Sydney on Monday morning. Although only 29 years of age, Professor Kurtz is hailed as one of the greatest orchestral conductors .of today (says the Star). He was specially engaged to conduct for Pavlova, and his work aroused enthusiasm in both Sydney and Melbourne. With two brothers and two sisters, he was compelled to leave Russia after the revolution. Neither of the parents was musical, but the children are remarkably talented, Edmund being a noted ’cellist and Arved a violinist. The professor, a pupil of Glazunoo, Max Bruch and Humperdinck, speaks with a strong foreign accent, and is a very temperamental gentleman. Having completed a wonderful season of four months in the Commonwealth, he is going to America and Germany to give opera and symphony concerts, and will return under the Williamson management next year with a German permanent orchestra to give performances in both Australia and New Zealand.
