LONGBURN.

(From Our Own Correspondent). LONGBURN, Aug. 23. A highly successful farewell smoke concert was held in the Longburn Hall on Wednesday in honour of Mr A. Mellor who is leaving the district to take up his residence in Napier. There was a large attendance of friends of the guest of honour present, representative of the surrounding as well as the local districts. Mr W. Weddell occupied the chair. The enthusiasm which prevailed gave ample ovidenoe o) Mr Mellor’s popularity during his sojourn in this district. During the evening the chairman., on nehall ol many friends, presented Mr Mellor with a lino travelling rug as a small' token of the esteem in which he has been held while resident in burn. The chairman mentioned that the guest of honour had served on many local having always taken a keen interest in matters having for their object the betterment of the district. Whilst expressing regret at Mr Mellor’s departure from the district, the chairman wished him every succoss in his new sphere. Ho also asked Mr Mellor to accept a beautiful eiderdown quilt for Mrs Mellor and. smaller presents for the children. Mr Small, chairman of directors of the Kairanga Dairy Company, also spoko expressing the company’s appreciation of the courteous and able manner in which Mr Mellor had always carried out his dutios whilst on the staff of the company. Mr Small took the opportunity of presenting Mr Mellor with a case containing a fountain pen and gold pencil. Messrs Meehan, Harris, Fahey, Anderson, Rodden, Aldersley, Stirling and Brocklisa also spoke endorsing tho remarks of the previous speakers. In a well-chosen speech Mr Mellor expressed on behalf of Mrs Mellor, himself and family his gratitude for tho kind remarks passed by the various speakers. Flo also extended sincere 'thanks for tho very valuable presents which he had received. Mr Mellor said that he regretted very much leaving the district but he was confident of improving his position by joining his father’s business in Napier.
